President George H.W. Bush attends the National Grocers Association trade exhibition in Orlando, Florida, on Feb. 4, 1992, in this photo op gone wrong. The New York Times used this shot on its front page, accompanied by an article with the headline “Bush Encounters the Supermarket, Amazed.” Although the reporter of the Times’ story didn’t attend the event, the article states that Bush struggled with relating to the middle class, and this reputation haunted Bush.

The group was supposed to take a formal photo that captured the shift in power, but the outgoing first lady was left standing with the box. After moments of fumbling, President Barack Obama placed the box inside the White House. Over a year later, Michelle Obama revealed the contents of the Tiffany box: a picture frame.

Babies and politicians have been a popular photo op for centuries. The first documented instance of a baby being kissed by a politician dates back to Andrew Jackson, though the president asked Secretary of War John Eaton to actually kiss the infant.
