Vanessa Williams was born on March 18, 1963 in the Bronx, New York.
She grew up in Millwood, New York, surrounded by her two parents, music teachers, and her little brother Christopher. Her family encourages her to get into music and it is in singing that she wishes to break through.
Thanks to a scholarship obtained at Syracuse University, she took acting classes, which she abandoned to turn to an artistic career and entered beauty contests. She became Miss New York in 1983 and won the Miss America title the following year. This is the first time an African-American woman has won such an award. Vanessa Williams then launched into song and her first album, The Right Stuff, quickly went gold. She released 12 albums between 1988 and 2009 and sold over 6 million records.

On the heart side, Vanessa Williams marries her manager Ramon Hervey. Together, they will have Melanie in 1987, Jillian in 1989 and Devin in 1993. After 10 years of marriage, the couple divorced in 1997. Two years later, she married basketball player Rick Fox, and gave birth to Sasha Gabriella in 2000, before breaking up in 2005. On July 4, 2015, after 5 years together, she married Jim Skrip.
