For the first time in the history of the Oscars, the public will participate in the election of the best film for the gala on March 27. And at the moment the favorites are already giving people something to talk about.

The Hollywood Film Academy announced that the 2022 Oscars would launch a new category that would involve the moviegoing public during the ceremony.

Thus was born #OscarsFanFavorite, an initiative to choose the audience's favorite film on Twitter that will be "recognized" unofficially during the gala on March 27.

Since then, users have gotten down to work and, according to Deadline, there are clear and unexpected favorites among the participants.

And it is that currently at number one is "Cinderella" by Camila Cabello, the Prime Video musical tape that has 43% of Rotten Tomatoes.

Of course, other great public favorites such as 'SpiderMan: No Way Home' are getting quite a few votes, although 'Minamata' stands out among them, a modest premiere film starring Johnny Depp, also with a large fan base that seems to be leading voting.

Even the film's director, Andrew Levitas, has been tweeting following the #OscarsFanFavorite hashtag.

To encourage participation in this idea, the Academy also reported that the best messages will be included in the broadcast of the gala and, in addition, the Academy will raffle among all the participants three trips to next year's ceremony, where the winners will be able to present one of the awards.

"The Oscars are an opportunity to unite people from all over the world with their love for cinema and through these activities, social network users now have more opportunities to interact with the gala in real time, form a community and be part of it. the experience," the Academy's vice president of digital marketing, Meryl Johnson, said in a statement.

The organization insisted that the most voted film will simply be "recognized", which may not be nominated for awards, but that the initiative does not open any official category.

In 2019, after several years in which the audience for the Oscars was plummeting, the Academy proposed the creation of a category that would reward the most "popular" film of the year, but the idea did not prosper, until now.
