Jennifer Connelly rarely sets a foot wrong when it comes to style, but her choice of dress left something to be desired at the premiere of her latest film in Toronto last night.

Wearing a deep red figure-hugging creation by Italian label Bottega Veneta, the dress did little for the actress's enviably slim frame.

Instead of clinging to every curve, the top half of the dress appeared uncomfortably tight, pushing down and flattening her chest rather than enhancing it. The bottom half, in contrast, appeared too loose.

The stunning 39-year-old did win some style points however. The scarlet hue, bang on trend for autumn, looked ravishing against her dark hair and pale skin, while the black Yves Saint Laurent Tribute platforms made for an elegant contrast.

A black clutch bag, also by Bottega Veneta, was another triumph, while her oversized purple cocktail ring was an imaginative accessory choice.

Jennifer was promoting her latest movie Creation, a film based on the life of Charles Darwin, who is played in the film by her real-life husband, Paul Bettany.

The couple, who met in 2001 on the set of A Beautiful Mind, seemed inseperable as they walked the red carpet, signing autographs for fans, and even presenting the film together on stage before its screening at the Toronto International Film Festival.

The mother-of-two, who is the face of Balenciaga, recently posed in a fashion magazine wearing a pair of eight-inch-high ankle boots.

Speaking about her latest role, she told InStyle magazine: 'Darwin and his wife Emma knew each other since childhood.

'They were first cousins, so the relationship I have with Paul and our degree of intimacy supported the ease and comfort our characters have with each other.'
