The scream scene that really scared Drew Barrymore

Producer Marianne Maddalena supported Lussier's story, adding that the crew went to great lengths to keep Jackson away from other actors, drawing on the mystery and paranoia surrounding Ghostface's identity throughout. Feature length of the first film (and all subsequent films):

WE HID IT. WE HAD SEPARATE BEDROOMS. HE WAS NEVER THERE. HAS NEVER BEEN IN HANDICRAFT SERVICES. I WAS ABSOLUTELY INCOGNITO. IT MADE THE SITUATION SCARY FOR THE ACTORS AND WES JUST GOT BETTER PERFORMANCES. IT IS SOMETHING COMPLETELY DIFFERENT THAN A SCRIPT SUPERVISOR WHO READS LINES. HE HAS AN AMAZING VOICE, BUT I DON'T KNOW HOW THREATENING HE WOULD BE IN PERSON, YOU KNOW?

It's hard to say whether the opening scene of "Scream," in which Ghostface taunts Barrymore over the phone, would still be as effective if Barrymore had acted in place of a script supervisor or if he had been spending time with Jackson on set. but it's so hard to imagine performance more visceral than what we see on screen. As for Jackson's voice sneaking up on the cast, all we can say is the same. There are many reasons why "Scream" always captures the hearts and minds of horror fans, and Jackson's voice is one of them.
