Emily Blunt was born on February 23, 1983 in Roehampton in the London suburbs. Daughter of Olivier Blunt, lawyer, and Janice Blunt, professor, she is the second of four siblings. As a child, Emily suffered from stuttering and couldn't get rid of it despite her mother's relaxation classes. At 12, it was thanks to a teacher who encouraged her to adopt a Yorkshire accent and work on her voice that she succeeded in overcoming her handicap. From then on, she was drawn to acting and comedy. She took acting lessons at a private institution recognized for its drama program, the Hurtwood House. In August 2000, she was chosen to play in a theater festival in Edinburgh.
