Cardi B defends controversial song ‘Girls’ in Twitter return
Cardi B is back on Twitter with a cause.
After disappearing from social media on Saturday following some harsh comments from Azealia Banks, the “Bodak Yellow” star was tweeting Tuesday and sticking up for the new song she’s featured on, “Girls.”
The song by Rita Ora about her bisexuality, which also features Bebe Rexha and Charlie XCX, contains lyrics that haven’t sat well with some memberes of the LGBTQ community.
“Listen to “GIRLS” by Rita Ora ft me @BebeRexha @charli_xcx,” Cardi tweeted on Tuesday. “We never try to cause harm or had bad intentions with the song. I personally myself had experiences with other woman, shiieeett with a lot of woman ! I though the song was a good song and i remember my experience.”
The mom-to-be, 25, who received backlash for a resurfaced interview with “The Breakfast Club” in which she used a derogatory term for lesbians, also apologized for what she said.
“I know i have use words before that I wasn’t aware that they are offensive to the LGBT community,” she admitted. “I apologize for that .Not everybody knows the correct ‘terms ‘to use. I learned and I stopped using it.”
Ora herself also apologized on Monday by tweeting, “I am sorry how I expressed myself in my song…I would never cause harm to other LGBTQ+ people or anyone.”
However their apologies may come too late as the song was not received well by other celebrities.
Singer Kehlani, who identifies as “queer,” took to Twitter on Friday saying that the song, which Ora referred to as “a celebration of love” to the Metro UK — contains “harmful lyrics.”
“Every artist on the song is fantastic, and very much loved and supported by me… by all of us,” she wrote, “but this isn’t about talent. it’s about choice,” she said adding, “I have an incredible song out with one of the artists, and would love to work with the other three as well. & have met them all and respect them. there. were. harmful. lyrics. period. love y’all.”
Katie Gavin, from the pop band Muna, echoed Kehlani’s thoughts, saying in a lengthy tweet, “a young confused bisexual kissing girls at slumber parties and getting shamed by the other girls for seeming like i was enjoying it too much. i hear those girls in this song. i hear the familiar chorus that women’s sexuality is something to be looked at instead of authentically felt.”
Cardi is back to tweeting as normal, including promotion of her “Invastion of Privacy” album and woes of pregnancy, however she’s not back on Instagram yet.
