Revealed thanks to La Balade sauvage by Terrence Malick in 1974, Sissy Spacek, whose real name is Mary Elizabeth Spacek, was born in Quitman (Texas) in the United States. After taking Lee Strasberg's lessons at the famous Actors Studio, she began her career as a film actress alongside Lee Marvin and Gene Hackman, in 1972, in Michael Ritchie's Carnage.

In 1974, her Wild Walk with her psychotic lover and abductor Martin Sheen reveals her enormous potential. Little surprising to see her thus named, two years later, at the Oscar for best actress for her role as an introverted high school girl, smothered by her mother and endowed with supernatural powers in the terrifying Carrie at the Devil's Ball (1976) signed Brian De Palma. The dramatic compositions follow one another for the actress, notably under the direction of Robert Altman for Three Women (1977), then when she turns Heart Beat (the first beatnicks) (1980) by John Byrum, with Nick Nolte .

By embodying the country singer of Nashville Lady (1981) directed by Michael Apted, Sissy Spacek changes register, provides an amazing performance and gleans several awards including an Oscar. She then confirms her talent in front of the Costa-Gavras camera for the political thriller (Missing) missing in 1982, which she shares with Jack Lemmon. Wife of Mel Gibson in the rainy drama The River (1985), trying to reveal a case of political corruption in Marie (1985) by Roger Donaldson, or sister of Diane Keaton and Jessica Lange in Crimes of the heart (1987), Sissy Spacek imposes henceforth a maturity which distances her from the characters of woman-children whom she was able to express with grace. The 1990s will continue to offer the actress many encounters and fruitful roles.

With The Long Road to Freedom (1990 – Richard Pearce), she co-starred with Whoopi Goldberg in this drama setting her story in 1960s America. She then played Kevin Costner's wife in the thrilling JFK (1991 ) directed by Oliver Stone. In the credits of many TV movies (including The Good Olds Boys directed by Tommy Lee Jones in 1995 and the western Streets of Laredo with James Garner and Sam Shepard), Sissy Spacek joins those of Paul Schrader's dark Affliction in 1997 and the moving Une true story (1999) told by David Lynch.

With her excellent performance in Todd Field's In the Bedroom in 2002, the actress is again showered with awards. She then appeared in La Maison au bout du monde (2004), played Charlize Theron's mother in L'Affaire Josey Aimes (2005), returned to horror with Le Cercle – The Ring 2 (2005) and American Haunting (2007), but also comedy with Hot Rod (2007) and Everything… except family (2008).

The actress returned to the big screen in 2010 in Le Grand Jour alongside Robert Duvall and Bill Murray. In 2011, she took part in the drama La Couleur des sentiments, setting her story in the state of Mississippi in the 1960s. Shot on a modest budget, the film met with great success across the Atlantic and was nominated several times for the Oscars (it wins one).In 2012, Sissy Spacek stars in the thriller Blackbird with Eric Bana, Olivia Wilde, Charlie Hunnam, Kris Kristofferson and Treat Williams.Gabriel Rolain
