John Goodman was ‘Crashed’ After Roseanne Barr was fired from ‘Roseanne’
Roseanne Barr’s termination from “Roseanne” hit John Goodman so hard that he “crashed” for many weeks, according to him.
“She is missed, definitely,” the 66-year-old Argo star stated on Jimmy Kimmel Live! on Monday, October 8. “After that many years, it’s like a family. And last year, it was so miraculous and so unreal that when it went away it was almost like a dream.”
Goodman claimed he went on a downhill spiral in May when ABC canceled the program after Barr made a racist remark about former Barack Obama advisor Valerie Jarrett.
“I thought, ‘Ok, I’ll be a big boy and handle this.’ And I just crashed for a couple weeks.”
“All kinds of weird stuff happened, my wife got sick after that and then I fell down the stairs,” Goodman stated, noting that he experienced multiple personal setbacks following Barr’s departure.
With the exception of Barr, Goodman and the rest of the “Roseanne” ensemble will continue to chronicle the Conner family tale in the spinoff “The Conners,” which premieres next week. But, as Goodman points out, playing Dan without Barr isn’t the same.
“It was very weird doing the first show without her because she’s my buddy,” he continued. “I mean, we’d just sit there and she’d make me laugh and I’d make her laugh, which is fun because there’s always a danger of her peeing herself.”
He acknowledged Barr’s choice to give up her financial share in the program in order to give it a new lease of life.
“She gave up a lot so that people could work,” said Goodman.
In an August interview with the Sunday Times, Goodman backed Barr, who had branded Obama administration advisor Valerie Jarrett the spawn of the “Muslim Brotherhood & “Planet of the Apes,” according to a since-deleted tweet.
“I know, I know, for a fact that she’s not a racist,” the actor stated, adding that he was taken aback by ABC’s decision to terminate “Roseanne.”
“I’ll put it this way, I was surprised at the response,” Goodman said. “And that’s probably all I should say about it.”
Goodman said that the show won’t be too different. “Same family minus mom.” Despite confirming that her character’s destiny will be addressed, he attempted to make light of the issue at the start of the show. “At the end of last season she goes out to the liquor store to fill her Vape pen and she hasn’t been back yet,” he added.
