The paparazzi always had a thing for Princess Diana. And why not? She was young, beautiful, and charismatic, even as a shy newlywed. So when she and Prince Charles flew to the Bahamas for a 10-day vacation in February 1982, they tried to fool the British press by traveling as Mr. and Mrs. Hardy. That trick didn’t work at all!
The tabloids struck gold. Diana was about five months pregnant at the time with Prince William (who was born in June that year). But instead of hiding her bump beneath a maternity swimsuit, she wore a bikini. When the photos appeared along with headlines like “Bahama Mama,” Queen Elizabeth called it “the blackest day in the history of British journalism.”
Sure, we wonder what the fuss was about now. But what strikes us about these photos are how happy the two parents-to-be look, and how affectionate they were with each other.
