Emma Stone Once Shared She Didn’t Do N-de Scenes Because Her Dad Would Never ‘Speak to Me’ Again
Like many actors, Emma Stone once had her reservations about doing n-dity in films. It was a personal choice the Cruella actor made early in her career for several reasons, one of which was her parents. The actor once quipped that her father in particular would kill her if she ever undressed for the big screen.
How Emma Stone dealt with body image issues
As is the case with most celebrities, Stone has been under intense scrutiny regarding her physique. Sometimes, Stone admitted that the comments she’d read about her body bothered her to a certain extent. According to USA Today, the La La Land star presented a theory as to why so many stars felt bothered by critics’ opinions about their bodies.
“I firmly believe that nothing really affects you or can really bother you if you don’t already feel that way about yourself. I’ve seen a lot of comments that say, ‘Eat a sandwich’ or ‘She looks sick.’ I’ve been looking at myself in the mirror being mean to myself. I’m not sick. I eat sandwiches,” she said.
It was also particularly concerning for Stone because she felt it set a bad example for her younger female fans.
“That has been kind of bothering me lately. I’ve shamed myself for it. We shame each other online. We’re always too skinny or too fat or too tall or too short. They’re just confirming this feeling I have about myself. I’m trying to figure my body out. It bothers me because I care so much about young girls. We’re shaming each other and we’re shaming ourselves, and it sucks,” she added.
Emma Stone didn’t want to do n-de scenes because her dad would never speak to her again
Stone has always been very close to her parents. She credited her parents for instilling in her the values needed to be the person she is today. And although they might have had their doubts about Stone pursuing acting as a profession, they were nonetheless supportive.
“My parents always made me feel as though I could do anything – not in a cheerleading, ‘You’re the greatest!’ kind of way; it was more, ‘You’re going to have to work hard, but we’ll support you however we can’. Just to have that kind of backing was incredible,” Stone once told You (via Contact Music).
But the Amazing Spider-Man co-star’s devotion to her mother and father was also the reason why she swore off doing n-de scenes.
“My dad would kill me if I posed n-ked,” she said. “He wouldn’t speak to me again and I really love my dad, so that’s always something that makes me a little nervous.”
Emma Stone would later go n-de for ‘The Favourite’
Stone would later find herself doing n-de scenes for the Oscar-nominated period piece The Favourite. Starring alongside Rachel Weisz and Olivia Colman, Stone plays a servant doing whatever it takes to move up the ranks in her position. In an interview with The Hollywood Reporter, Stone revealed there was one scene in the film that didn’t require her to be n-de. But the actor insisted to strip for the scene anyway.
“And as we were shooting it and we did a few takes, I said, ‘Can I please just be [n-ked]?’ I think it’s going to give Sarah something to look at when she sees that I’m not just under the sheet covered up. Olivia was like, ‘No, don’t do it!’ Yorgos was like, ‘Are you sure that’s what you want to do?’ And I was like, ‘Absolutely.’ I chose to do it. I was like, this makes sense to me. It’s an absolute [Stone flips the bird] to Sarah,” she said.
