Kate Winslet discusses "awkward" s-x scenes in past movies

Kate Winslet has said that she wishes she had been able to work with intim-cy coordinators while filming s-x scenes on some of her past movies, saying that she "could have done with that friend" on set.

Titanic and Revolutionary Road actress Winslet told Samira Ahmed during a live edition of the How I Found My Voice podcast  that she would have felt a lot more comfortable filming s-x scenes in the past if productions had hired intim-cy coordinators to work with the actors – a practice which has only recently become common.

"I definitely wish I had them in the past, I definitely do," she said. "I just could have done with that friend really. Just having a friend to say, 'Can you ask him just to not put his hands on him there?' So it's not you having to say, which can be pretty awkward."

The actress revealed that she actually decided to act as an intim-cy coordinator for her younger co-star Angourie Rice on the set of their upcoming HBO miniseries Mare of Easttown, after Rice had to film an intim-te scene.

Winslet added that in order to be close enough to reassure Rice she had to position herself close to the scene, which meant sitting in the boot of a car.

"Because there were no clothes that came off in the scene they didn't consider bringing in an intim-cy coordinator," the actress explained. "And I just got the sense that she was nervous. So I said to her, 'I'm going to be around for this, I'm going to stay, I won't leave the set.' She said: 'Thank God Kate, thank you so much.'

"And I ended up being in the car. I ended up being in the boot of the car. I knew it would make them feel better to have that one person who would be able to put their hand up and say: 'Actually we need to cut now, is everyone feeling OK?'

"Sometimes even directors don't feel comfortable communicating with actors about intim-te scenes, even if it's just kissing."

Winslet previously revealed that she took charge of a love scene between herself and co-star Saoirse Ronan in their romantic drama Ammonite because "it just made sense."

"Women know what women want, let's not beat about the bush. Saoirse and I knew we could unite in our feelings about these characters and where they're at, and to tell that story physically. It was a very joyful experience," she said.

Mare of Easttown sees Oscar-winner Winslet play a small-town Pennsylvania detective named Mare Sheehan, who investigates a local murder while her own life begins to crumble.

Watchmen star Jean Smart plays Mare's mother Helen, while American Horror Story and X-Men actor Evan Peters stars as a detective named Colin Zabel. The series also stars Boardwalk Empire's Julianne Nicholson, Marvel star Guy Pearce and The Office US actor David Denman.
