Kim Kardashian lost 7 kilos to wear a Marilyn Monroe dress
As the Met Gala red carpet drew to a close on Monday night, Kim Kardashian appeared stunning in the exact same shimmering, skin-tight gown Marilyn Monroe wore when she sang. happy birthday for President John F. Kennedy’s 45th birthday in 1962.
Created 60 years ago by Hollywood designer Jean Louis, the dress represents one of the outfits most iconic of Marilyn Monroe. The legendary garment currently belongs to Ripley’s Believe it or Not!, a museum and event franchise that purchased it for a record $4.8 million at a 2016 auction.
Hand in hand with her boyfriend, comedian Pete Davidson, Kim had her eyes on her as she walked down the iconic stairs of the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York during one of the biggest nights in the world of fashion.
Kim paired the iconic dress with white gold Cartier diamond drop earrings and a furry white jacket that she strategically kept down to cover her rear. But that’s not all, her commitment to him look it was so big that she dyed her dark hair platinum blonde.
Part of the legend surrounding the fabled dress is that Marilyn couldn’t wear underwear underneath. Also, it was so tight that the actress had trouble walking during her 1962 performance. This was the same problem Kim faced, as she was seen climbing the stairs of the Met with such difficulty that she had to be helped by Pete.
According to Ripley’s, modifications to the frail dress were not allowed and Kim only wore it to climb the Grand Staircase at the Met, so what she wore for the rest of the gala was an exact replica of it.
In interview with vogue, Kim said that she had been planning to wear the iconic dress since last year, that it had been transported by security guards and that she had to wear gloves when trying it on.
The idea really came to me after the gala in September last year. I said to myself: ‘What would I have done for the American theme if it hadn’t been the Balenciaga look? What’s the most American thing you can think of?’ And that’s Marilyn Monroe. For me, the most Marilyn Monroe moment is her when she sang ‘Happy Birthday’ to JFK.
Sadly, Kim revealed that the garment was so tight that on fitting day it didn’t fit. However, her desire to use it was so great that losing weight became a challenge for the celebrity, managing to lose seven kilos in just three weeks!
[…] When it didn’t fit me I wanted to cry because it can’t be changed at all. It was that or nothing. I wore a sauna suit twice a day, ran on the treadmill, completely cut out all sugar and carbs, and only ate the cleanest veggies and protein. I didn’t starve, but she was very strict. I wanted to cry with joy when it stayed.
At the end of the night, Kim tweeted that she was “honored” to be the first person to wear the dress since Monroe wore it decades ago:
Met Gala — In America: A Fashion Anthology
I am so honored to wear the iconic dress that Marilyn Monroe wore in 1962 to sing ‘Happy Birthday’ to President John F. Kennedy. It’s a stunning form-fitting gown adorned with over 6,000 crystals hand-sewn by Jean Louis.
