'Black Swan' is the latest work by Darren Aronofsky, husband of Rachel Weisz and director of 'The Wrestler' and 'Requiem for a Dream'. Portman plays Nina, a prima ballerina at one of New York's leading ballet companies. Her upcoming role in 'Swan Lake' will force her to bring out the darker side of her sweet personality, as her peers compete to steal her spot.
The young woman will establish a complex friendship with Lily, a dancer with the same appearance and opposite personality with whom she will experience an intense rivalry that will awaken new facets of her character. As the premiere approaches, Nina will doubt if her friend really exists or is a product of her imagination.
The film has several controversial scenes, the most prominent of which leads Portman to have sexual relations with the other protagonist, Mila Kunis. The actress has declared that the scene "is not obscene, it is extreme" and that it has influenced her own sexual identity for being "strange to do things in a film that you are still considering."
Successful career
Portman has always said that being smart is more important to her than being a movie star, to the point that she missed several Revenge of the Sith propotional events to prepare for her psychology final exams at Harvard University.
The actress is one of the few performers capable of successfully combining blockbusters with independent cinema. Among her upcoming works is the big screen adaptation of 'Thor' and the drama 'Hesher', where she plays a grocery store clerk who will protect a defenseless boy from a fight and meets a young loser who expects nothing from the life.
