Natalie's Substitute Dancer In "Black Swan" Sarah Lane Feels That She's The One Who Worked Harder Because Natalie Can't Dance With Flexibility.
Winning the 2011 Oscar in the Best Actress category because "Black Swan" apparently still makes Natalie Portman receive scathing criticism. Previously, the former governor of Arkansas, Mike Huckabee, thought that Natalie had sent an irresponsible message to young women.
"You know, one of the problems is people looking at Natalie Portman or some other Hollywood star and saying, 'Hey look, you know what, we have kids, we're not married but we have kids and they're fine,'" Mike said. "But there aren't many single moms out there who make millions of dollars every year starring in movies."
This time, Natalie was again bombarded with criticism about her acting as ballet dancer Nina Sayers in the film "Black Swan". According to Sarah Lane, who appeared as a substitute dancer in the film, Natalie wasn't really that good at dancing. Sarah, whose name was not mentioned when Natalie delivered her victory speech and was only listed as an extra in the film's credit title, felt that she was the one who contributed to Natalie's success at the Oscars.
"The Fox Searchlight tried to manipulate by spreading that Natalie was able to become a ballet dancer in just a year and a half. So I know they don't want any publications about me," Sarah told Dance Magazine. "How unlucky this is, as a professional dancer, I work very hard but people just believe that it can be learned in just a year. That's what I really object to."
The slanted comment, of course, was immediately denied by the choreographer and actor "Black Swan", Benjamin Millepied. In the Los Angeles Times, Benjamin confirmed that it was his fiancé who worked the hardest of all the stars involved.
"There's an article today that talks about Natalie's double dancer Sarah Lane of the American Ballet Theatre, which makes Sarah seem like she's doing more work when she's only doing a few parts and saying one sentence during a studio scene, 85 percent of the film is Natalie's creations," said Benjamin. The actor who is also a professional dancer added, in addition to computer techniques and shooting tricks, the reason Natalie was able to dance ballet in just a year and a half was because she learned several types of styles that were not too complicated.
Apparently, Sarah still didn't accept it. He felt that 85 percent of what Benjamin called was bullshit. Even Sarah claimed that the overall performance when Natalie danced was only highlighted about 5 percent.
"It's an insult to professional dancers not just me. I've been doing it for 22 years. Can you become a concert pianist in a year and a half even if you're a movie star?" Sarah told Entertainment Weekly. "From a professional dancer's point of view, Natalie doesn't look like a professional ballet dancer at all and she can't dance in ballet shoes and she can't move her body. She's so stiff."
