Emilia Clarke, the actress who has played Daenerys, mother of dragons, in the Game of Thrones series, which came to an end last Sunday, has revealed to Variety magazine how she prepared for one of the peak scenes of the last chapter, when he harangues his troops.
First, Clarke confessed that despite the fact that during the recording of the last two seasons they were very aware that the end was near, nobody really prepared her about how to feel before the absolute end of a series in which she has been involved for eight years. . "Honestly, it feels very, very strange," she says Clarke in her conversation.
But in the interview he also discovered another secret of his interpretation in the final outcome: how he prepared for the harangue he gives to his troops in the Red Keep: “Throughout the series I have had to learn false languages and I have given many speeches , but I felt a lot of pressure with this one. Any actor can tell you that the days on set are long and then you go home and do your homework, which is to learn the part for the next day. But besides that it has to be done in a false language! It almost killed me. I usually do it quickly but this speech meant a lot to me. I was very worried. I stayed up very late every night for about two months. I threw the speech in my kitchen, in my fridge… I told all of Belfast from my window! Well, the window was closed because he didn't really want people to think he was barking," the actress explains wryly.
"The morning that I had to shoot the scene, I hadn't slept at all because I had been up all night," she continues. Emilia Clarke even admits that she cried thinking that she could not do it, that it would ruin the scene, one of the highlights of her character. In the series, an army stands before Daenerys to listen to her. In reality, Clarke harangued a green screen: “There was no one there, just a camera and an empty green room. She felt a certain disconnection and she knew that she had to be totally focused and that she had to be absolutely prepared to make a fool of herself."
But her months of worrying paid off, and the actress says, “Then the strangest thing happened: I didn't rehearse and I got through it all the first time. It was the only time I made that speech without making a mistake. If they had asked me to do it the next day, I would have already forgotten about it.” The most curious of the details that Clarke gives about how she prepared herself for that moment has to do with who she was inspired to do it. “I watched a lot of videos of dictators and powerful leaders speaking in a different language to see if I could understand what they were saying without knowing the language. And you can! You can absolutely understand what Hitler says even if he speaks in a foreign language. So I thought, "If I can believe every word I say, the audience won't have to watch the subtitles too much."
