The actor was speaking to The Sunday Times ahead of the premiere of the seventh season of Game of Thrones, which premieres in a few short weeks (July 16th to be precise), where she spoke about how, after she signed up to GoT as a young teenager, she was made privy to some of the show’s more…ad-lt themes.
“The first time I found out about oral s-x was reading the Game of Thrones script,” Turner admitted. “I was 13. I said, ‘Wow! People do that? That’s fascinating.’”
Continuing, Turner joked:
"I guess that was my s-x education. Being on Game of Thrones."
Yikes, perhaps someone should have maybe checked Sophie’s script first? 13 is still pretty young to be learning about the ins and outs of S-x, especially when it’s not being taught properly.
Elsewhere in the interview, Sophie Turner discussed and defended the controversial scene in which her character Sansa was raped by her husband, Ramsey Bolton, on their wedding night.
“S-xual assault wasn’t something that had affected me or anybody I knew, so I was pretty blasé about the whole thing. “Naively so,” she admitted. “And then I shot the scene, and in the aftermath there was this huge uproar that we would depict something like that on television. My first response was like, ‘maybe we shouldn’t have put that on screen at all.’”
Continuing, Turner said that the backlash to the scene and her experience filming it allowed her realize how she truly felt on the matter. It was, she explained, a moment where she arrived at her own decisions without “regurgitating other people’s opinions.”
“The more we talk about s-xual assault the better, and screw the people who are saying we shouldn’t be putting this on TV and screw the people who are saying they’re going to boycott the show because of it,” she told The Sunday Times. “This sort of thing used to happen and it continues to happen now, and if we treat it as such a taboo and precious subject, then how are people going to have the strength to come out and feel comfortable saying that this has happened to them?”
We don’t know too much about what we can expect for Sansa when Game of Thrones returns, but we do know that now she’s been reunited with Jon Snow that she’s no longer (hopefully) in too much danger. Right?
