Emilia Clarke reveals which 'terrifying’ Daenerys scene made her ‘cry’

Emilia Clarke has said filming graphic scenes in the TV series was “terrifying” and described some her early scenes as “virtually r-pe scenes”.

Emilia Clarke has been discussing her reaction to some of the earliest work in Game of Thrones and has praised co-star Jason Momoa for his support and guidance through harrowing scenes. Fans saw her character Daenerys Targaryen in several difficult to watch scenes after she was married off to Khal Drogo.

From the very start of Game of Thrones, audiences were made aware this would be a series that would contain graphic depictions of s--x and violence.

On occasion, that would include s-xual violence.

A character who was subjected to such scenes was Daenerys, who at the start of the fantasy epic was treated no more than as a flesh pawn by her brother Viserys (Harry Lloyd) to secure his accession to the Iron Throne.

To ensure that, Viserys forces his sister into a marriage with warlord Khal Drogo (Jason Momoa).

Clarke has been discussing those scenes and her time on the show in the Armchair Podcast, hosted by Dax Shephard, and how she found those scenes.

Shephard called some of those scenes “terrifying” and “virtually r-pe scenes”, statements which Clarke agreed with.

“He was crying more than I was,” said Clarke.

Clarke went on to praise Momoa for his consideration and she now recognises how “fortunate” she was to have worked with him on those scenes.

“He took care of me, he really did. In an environment where I didn't know I needed to be taken care of."

Clarke explained how Momoa used his experience in filming these scenes to make it as comfortable as possible.

"It's only now that I realize how fortunate I was with that, because that could have gone many, many, many different ways.

“Because Jason had experience, he had done a bunch of stuff before coming on to this, he was like, 'Sweetie, this is how it's meant to be and this is how it's not meant to be, and I'm going to make sure that's the way it goes.’”
