Last month, she raised eyebrows when she was seen locking lips with another woman during a racy romp on her new HBO drama The Deuce.
And in the latest episode of her raunchy show, which aired on Sunday, the 39-year-old actress was seen back in character as prostitute Candy, going topless as she performed oral s-x on a male client.
However, as the graphic action got underway, things went awry in the worst way possible as her customer was seen dying in the middle of their illicit encounter.
In another graphic scene, Candy was seen getting interrupted while performing the same s-x act in a p-rn cinema, when a rat jumped onto her mid-act.
In the show, about the rise of of the p-rn industry in 1970s New York, Maggie stars as single mother Eileen Merrell, who walks the streets under the name of Candy.
And last week, Jake Gyllenhaal's big sister was seen baring her breasts while locking lips with another woman as her character filmed a low budget p-rn movie.
Leaning casually against a folded out sofa bed, the Hollywood star looked bored as her character watched a n-ked man standing in front of her.
Clad in a badly fitted blonde wig arranged in a side plait, the actress was unrecognisable from the dark-haired star famous for roles in the likes of The Dark Knight and Donnie Darko.
In the racy scenes, she was seen kneeling on the floor at the foot of the sofa bed while staring up at a man, before climbing onto the bed with another woman after her character Candy agreed to take part in a low budget adult movie.
Wearing a white bodysuit, the Golden Globe Award-winning actress leaned into her female co-star and gazed up at the camera, as two n-ked men stood just off screen.
The other woman was clad in a skimpy purple negligee as she wrapped her arms around Maggie's characters waist while the cameras roll.
Both women wear chunky heels as they shoot the p-rn film in the basement of a house in the New York suburbs.
The Deuce was created by the team behind another HBO smash hit series, The Wire, and follows the story of the legalisation of the p-rn industry and subsequent boom of prostitution and p-rn in Times Square.
t takes place from the 1970s to 1980s and also stars Hollywood actor James Franco, who plays twins Vincent Martino, who serve as a front for the mob.
Per a trailer for the series, Candy ventures from prostitution into the newly legal p-rn business, ultimately making her way behind the camera.
She explained to Time Out recently: 'She gets involved in the beginnings of p-rn in someone’s basement. And even though there’s two n-ked guys and another n-ked woman and they’re filming s-x, that’s incidental to her.
'What’s exciting for her is the lighting, the idea of looking at s-x through a lens. It’s the birth of an artist. Once that gets woken up in her, it can’t go back to sleep.'
Some of Maggie's s-x scenes were directed by co-star James, who has praised her professionalism on set.
He told Men's Health in August: 'I had to direct s-x scenes in The Deuce and, whooo, it was interesting, I have to say.
'Maggie Gyllenhaal, in addition to being just an incredible actress, is fearless, and she really led the charge with how she handled the s-x scenes and how she handled herself, and really set the template for everyone else.'
Maggie, meanwhile, spoke to 1970s prostitutes while preparing for the role, and told Vulture: 'There’s this fake power structure for prostitutes where you go: "I’m in charge, I’m going to set the price, I’m going to set the boundaries," and yet you’re alone in a room with someone that could rape you if they wanted to.'
She went on: 'I think that’s troubling, and I think that requires an amount of dissociation that makes it impossible to keep your mind intact,' also discussing the fact filming went on as last year's U.S. election campaigns thundered along.
'We would be watching the debates at lunch. I feel like my sense of s-xism in relation to my own life got much clearer.' she's theorised, adding that 'to be playing a prostitute who is dealing with herself in relation to her s-xuality, her money, her art, her intellect, was pretty fascinating'.
