"It was a little weird," Ricci admitted about filming the intimate scene. "Anytime you’re rooting around like two pigs in front of 20 men or women on a set, it’s kind of bizarre, especially with someone you met when you were 9 and he was 27. But we get along so well that we could both laugh it off and say, ‘This is really irritating.’”
Aside from the love scene, "The Man Who Cried" marks another milestone for Ricci, as it is her first role requiring an English accent. In the film, she plays a young Jewish girl living in pre-World War II Paris, with Depp as her co-star portraying a quiet gypsy who steals her heart.
Despite the challenge of mastering the accent, Ricci appreciated the opportunity to convey her character's emotions through actions rather than words. Director Sally Potter chose Ricci for the role because of her ability to effectively communicate without speaking.
Overall, Ricci expressed her enjoyment of working with Depp again and how their longstanding friendship made the on-screen romance more comfortable, even with the awkwardness of filming intimate scenes.
