McLaughlin was the first person to connect the murders of the infamous 1960s Boston Strangler killings and break the story, and Knightley shared that her work inspired her to take on the role.
The Pirates of the Caribbean actress spoke about how helpful it was to have McLaughlin's written work available to her, as it was "very evocative" and helped her capture the journalist's spirit.
Knightley also studied McLaughlin's interviews and noted her "steely determination," which she loved.
However, Knightley also emphasized that the film is "based on reality, it’s not a documentary" and that there is a fictional element to it. Despite this, she said that the joy of working on a project like this is being able to run with your own ideas.
Boston Strangler will be available to stream on Hulu starting March 17th.
