At the Power of Women luncheon hosted by Variety in New York, actress and
Girls writer Lena Dunham spoke candidly about her experience with s-xual assault
and how it made her feel powerless.
The 28-year-old artist, who was receiving an award for her work with GEMS, an organization that helps girls who are victims of human trafficking, revealed that she had been raped by a college classmate in her memoir Not That Kind of Girl.
Dunham shared that the assault made her feel like her value had been determined by someone else, and that her body and choices were meaningless.
It took her years to recognize that her personal worth was not tied to her assault and the voices telling her she deserved it were liars, Dunham added.
As a feminist and a s-xual assault survivor, her ultimate goal is to use her experience, platform, and privilege to reverse stigma and give voice to other survivors.
