However, by the time Davies finished her book, the couple had become pariahs and were being shunned and ridiculed. Davies believes that the Americans see them very clearly now, and the people they once glommed on to, including politicians, movie stars, humanitarians, movie moguls, publishers, and billionaires, have dropped them.
