The couple had faced intense media scrutiny and attacks, and decided to spend some time away from the drama to cool off. During their time on the island, Harry writes that they were warmly welcomed by the locals and were able to experience a sense of normalcy that they had been missing.
He describes feeling apprehensive when venturing out into the nearest village, unsure of how they would be received. However, he was pleasantly surprised by the lack of attention they received.
"They gave us space, while also managing to make us feel welcome, with a kind smile, a wave. They made us feel like part of a community. They made us feel normal," Harry writes.
It seems that the Canadians on Vancouver Island were able to provide the couple with the respite they so desperately needed, allowing them to escape the intense scrutiny of the British media and experience a sense of belonging in a new community.
