The musician revealed that he is much happier now at the age of 39 than he was at 32, when he dated Taylor Swift.
Mayer reflected on his brief relationship with Swift, who is 12 years his junior, and the fallout from their split, which resulted in the track "Dear John" being written about him.
During the interview, Mayer also responded to being ranked as Katy Perry's top lover, a ranking she revealed during a famous interview with James Corden. However, Mayer did not have much to say on the matter, cryptically stating that he has "hacked this game" and pays little of the price of fame now.
Mayer also discussed his move from alcohol to cannabis, explaining that he has put cannabis where drinking used to go and that his quality of life has improved considerably as a result.
He criticized drinking, saying that it always felt wrong for him and that there was never an amount that felt like he was succeeding at life. He assured that weed doesn't make him "too weird or too inside his own head" and that he is much more open-minded to small changes in consciousness.
Finally, Mayer credited Ed Sheeran for a welcome shift back to the fundamentals of songwriting. He believes that artists care more about songs now than ever before and that there is a shift back to real fundamentals in songwriting. Mayer praised Sheeran's dedication to songwriting, calling him a star athlete and phenomenal guitar player.
