In his memoir "Spare," the Duke of Sussex recounts how he threatened to quit after being stopped from being deployed in Iraq in 2007 due to security reasons. Harry turned to his superior, whom he refers to as "Colonel," and expressed his desire to find a way back onto operations.
"The guy got it," Harry explains. "As a soldier, he felt for me. He shuddered at the thought of being kept from a scrap.
He really did want to help." The Colonel then suggested that Afghanistan might be an option, to which Harry initially squinted in confusion.
He recalls thinking, "Afghanistan? ...safer?... What on earth was he banging on about? Afghanistan was worlds more dangerous than Iraq."
However, Harry ultimately trusted his superior's judgment and trained for the war at Sandringham.
