Prince Harry and Meghan Markle had an incredible year of recovery. After they abandoned their commitments in the royal family in 2020 and moved permanently to California, 2021 brought new controversies and challenges, as well as some stability for the couple. Among the controversies, one cannot fail to mention the controversial interview with Oprah Winfrey, which left important consequences in the relationship between him and his family. On the other hand, Meghan also had to endure conflicts with her father and her half-siblings. Also this year, the Sussexes welcomed Lilibet Diana, their second daughter, Archie's younger sister.
In relation to his philanthropic projects and to be present in some way on the world agenda, especially at this time, when COP26 (the UN World Summit against Climate Change) was being held, a statement published in the Archewell site announced that its foundation will become "net zero by 2030." Net zero means zero carbon emissions.
To achieve net zero, the statement details the decisions the foundation plans to make to achieve its goal. During the years that follow in this decade, Archewell will control its use of electricity and heating, its dependence on the large industries that contribute to the problem, the commuting and transportation of its employees and even the food provided to them.
The big announcement seems written to counteract the indifference of the queen in the speech delivered, through a videoconference, during the inauguration of the summit against climate change. There, the British sovereign only mentioned Prince Charles, her grandson William and her deceased husband, Prince Philip, as "true leaders" in the fight to save the planet.
The statement continues with the announcement that Archewell will spend 2022 monitoring its carbon footprint so it can identify where changes need to be made and then develop a plan to achieve zero carbon emissions. “We can be net zero”, the text says and adds: “This is what we commit to do”.
The Daily Mail noted that Queen Elizabeth II purposely did not mention Harry, a staunch environmentalist, in her COP26 speech. A royal expert told the newspaper the omission was "glaring", especially since he mentioned Prince Philip, Prince Charles and Prince William.
