The movie changed the fortunes of both Winslet and her co-star Leonardo DiCaprio, making them both overnight sensations. Winslet received critical acclaim and an Academy Award nomination for her portrayal of Rose DeWitt Bukater, a charming and neurotic teenager desperate to escape the monotony of aristocracy and abusive relationships with her mother and fiancé.
Over two decades later, Winslet has reunited with Cameron for "Avatar: The Way of Water", the highly anticipated sequel to the 2009 blockbuster "Avatar". During a candid interview with Radio Times, Cameron revealed that Winslet, who was then a young actress with a portfolio consisting mostly of indie movies, was very intimidated by the grandeur of the film's production.
She was a bit stressed out as "Titanic" was her first big-budget film, and Cameron thinks she came out of it "a bit traumatised by the scale of the production and her responsibility within it."
Despite her initial apprehension, Winslet gave her all to the role, and once she overcame her shyness, she became very confident and took charge on set. Cameron said, "You'd swear she was producing the film."
In "Avatar: The Way of Water", Winslet portrays the Metkayina leader Ronal. The movie takes place more than a decade after the events of the first film, and it shows Jake (the protagonist) in a stable relationship with Neytiri and as a parent of three children.
Cameron has announced four sequels to "Avatar", with two of them already filmed. The director plans to start shooting the remaining two depending on the box-office performance of "Avatar: The Way of Water".
