Winning an Emmy for the Meghan Markle and Prince Harry documentary on Netflix could reignite interest in the couple and establish them as serious figures in the U.S.
The California-based Duke and Duchess of Sussex have achieved tremendous success with their Netflix documentary, "Harry and Megan," which explores their lives after stepping away from the Royal Family in March 2020, as reported by the Daily Express US.
The series, part of a $100 million deal with the streaming giant, has shattered viewership records and is now being recognized with prestigious honors.
The campaign to redefine the couple's image after their departure from the Royal Family is evidently working, as their popularity in the U.S. has soared in recent polls. Entertainment expert Mark Proudman believes that Meghan and Harry could secure an Emmy nomination, which would bring them further recognition.
Proudman, who also serves as Mark Meets Entertainment Editor, shared with the Daily Express US, "The United States has always been fascinated by the Royal Family. Winning an Emmy will certainly renew interest in Harry and Meghan for all the right reasons. Winning an award, whether it's an Oscar or an Emmy, puts you at the top of your class. It's sure to bring interest your way and build trust with people."
Boardman believes that a win for the couple would make the American public start taking the Sussexes more seriously and would also be a huge boon for Netflix. He added, "All the people behind the Netflix team who have worked so hard to do all this will feel it was worth it.
It was the interest in Harry and Meghan, the content, not Netflix itself. Netflix is going to dress this up for the hills, and in terms of its American audience, people may finally start taking Harry and Meghan seriously.
A win will give them the coverage they want and will give them some breathing room to decide what to do next. That's the difference between winning and being nominated—the money will be transferred, and the couple will be funded."
Recently, the royal duo confirmed finalizing a $20 million deal with the music streaming company Spotify, which has sparked speculation about a potential Netflix deal being in the works as well. However, a spokesperson for Netflix quickly refuted the rumors, stating that the deal with the Sussexes is not finalized anytime soon.
They informed Entertainment Tonight, "The relationship with Archewell Productions is one we deeply value. Harry and Meghan launched as Netflix's most exciting documentary yet. Our exciting journey with them will not end anytime soon. We are currently collaborating on several projects, including the long-awaited documentary series, 'Heart of Invictus.'"
