According to royal expert Daniela Elsa, the couple experienced a significant snub when their Netflix show, creatively titled "Harry and Megan," failed to receive any Emmy Award nominations this year. In contrast, acclaimed documentaries such as "A Hundred Foot Wave" and "The 1619 Project" were recognized in the Outstanding Documentary or Non-Fiction Series category.
Elsa stated that the absence of an Emmy nomination for the Netflix series was bad news for the Sussexes, highlighting it as the latest in a string of missteps made by the couple in recent years. She further emphasized that the public's affection for the once-beloved couple has waned rapidly. Elsa remarked, "This bad news is just the latest in a string of blows, snubs, and announcements that have buffeted the pair of late. Here we are, only three and a half years after they made a break for it, with the couple's Hollywood careers appearing to have entered the Anna Nicole Smith phase."
Regarding the Netflix series, despite being the second most popular non-fiction series on Netflix during its debut week with 81.5 million hours watched, Elsa pointed out that it pales in comparison to the top non-fiction show, "The Tinder Swindle," which garnered 166 million hours watched in its first 28 days. Elsa also mentioned the couple's disappointment over the Primetime Emmys snub, noting that they had high hopes for the series to achieve significant recognition at the awards ceremony. This snub reportedly left them devastated.
The commentator suggested that the Sussexes' decision to expose their private royal life through the docu-series, which aired just three months after the Queen's death in December, received criticism for the way they spoke about the Royal Family. Ingrid's, who shared insights with the Mirror, stated, "In the series, they talk about the royal family as if they were the enemy while they themselves are trying to save the world."
Furthermore, Megan Markle's individual ventures seem to be diminishing, as she faced negative comments from Spotify's Bill Simmons, who referred to the Sussexes as "effing grifters." Biographer Tom Bower believes that their joint endeavors are falling apart, and Megan's controversial reputation makes it challenging for her to maintain a successful brand. Bower commented, "They're beginning to taste the medicine that they handed out after the Oprah interview and finding it very, very hard to keep their brand reputable." The couple is constantly forced to defend themselves and pursue opportunities that may no longer be available.
Additionally, Harry's solo projects may not fare well either. It was revealed that he would be working on a Netflix documentary in Africa, which some doubt will be of interest to audiences. Meanwhile, Megan was rumored to be considering a fashion brand collaboration after signing with A-list talent agency WME. However, due to her controversial image, her involvement in such projects may be hindered by the associated baggage.
The couple faces multiple challenges and is encountering difficulties in maintaining their reputation and achieving success in their respective endeavors.
