Emily Blunt Regrets Passing on MCU's Multi-Million Dollar Role

Emily Blunt found herself in a conundrum when she had to turn down a notable role as a renowned female superhero due to pre-existing contractual commitments. Initially, Blunt was the top choice to portray Black Widow in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, a coveted part that ultimately went to Scarlett Johansson.

The British actress candidly disclosed that she had declined the opportunity due to her obligations for Gulliver’s Travels, a project she was committed to in the same year. In a recent appearance on the Happy Sad Confused podcast, Blunt expressed her sentiment, affirming that the role eventually landed in the hands of the "best girl," hinting that she held no regrets about her decision.

Addressing the speculation swirling around the other superhero roles she was rumored to be offered, such as Captain Marvel, Peggy Carter, and Sue Storm, Blunt dismissively referred to them as "rumors, talk, queries."

Scarlett Johansson swiftly captured the audience's admiration as Black Widow, also known as Natasha Romanoff, in 2010's Iron Man 2. Her portrayal resonated so well that she became a fixture in subsequent films throughout the MCU's Infinity Saga, culminating in a standalone film in 2021. However, this success was tinged with legal tension as Johansson filed a contentious lawsuit against Disney.

Emily Blunt had previously delved into her potential casting during an appearance on Howard Stern's SiriusXM show in 2019. She recounted, “I was contracted to do Gulliver's Travels, I didn't want to do Gulliver's Travels. It was a bit of a heartbreaker for me because I take such pride in the decisions that I make, and they mean so much to me, the films that I do, so that was tough.”

She elaborated on her rationale behind considering the role of Black Widow, citing her desire to collaborate with Robert Downey Jr., who portrayed Iron Man in the extended franchise. Blunt shared, “I love Iron Man and when I got offered Black Widow, I was obsessed with Iron Man. I wanted to work with Robert Downey Jr. It would've been amazing. But I don't know if superhero movies are for me. They're not up my alley. I don't like them. I really don't.”
