The Duke and Duchess of Sussex have come under scrutiny for reportedly requesting a school to sign a "gagging clause." This clause, intended to prohibit the disclosure of information, has raised concerns and drawn criticism. In 2021, during a visit to a Harlem school, Prince Harry and Meghan Markle arranged a reading event for the Duchess' book "The Bench." However, the event's arrangements included the controversial clause, which applied to both the school's staff and students.
During the visit, children from underprivileged backgrounds were provided with new cushions to sit on as they listened to the Duchess speak. This seemingly innocent gesture, however, has sparked negative reactions from some commentators who question its appropriateness.
In her scathing remarks, Jan Moir, a columnist for the Daily Mail, expressed her disbelief at the actions of Meghan and Harry, stating that she didn't think the couple could "sink any lower." Moir, an expert on royal matters, showed no mercy in her critique, accusing the Sussexes of exceeding "all negative expectations."
Moir went on to take a direct swipe at Prince Harry and Meghan, suggesting that their alleged attention-seeking behavior was at play. She pointed out that poverty, though regrettable, can often be portrayed in a sympathetic light. However, in the case of the Sussexes, she criticized their seemingly calculated humanitarian moments, captured by their Netflix crew for the documentary released in December 2022.
The accusations against Meghan Markle and Prince Harry regarding the school's gagging clause and the subsequent criticism they have faced have only added to the growing chorus of negative opinions surrounding the couple's actions.
