Adams and Markle, both 42, portrayed love interests Michael Ross and Rachel Zane, respectively, for nine seasons from 2011 to 2019. They also became great friends on the set. When the Duchess of Sussex married Prince Harry in May 2018, Adams attended their wedding. However, following the festivities, the two gradually lost touch.
In October 2020, Adams revealed to the Radio Times that fear had prevented him from reaching out to his former co-star. He candidly admitted, "Quite frankly, I think I'm intimidated. I have no doubt I could pick up the phone and call her at any moment, but I don't know what I would say." Adams shared that he had been in touch with Markle around the time when the Sussexes welcomed their son, Archie, and he had his daughter with his wife, Troian Bellisario. He mentioned that there were exchanged texts and gifts but confessed to feeling a little apprehensive about reconnecting.
In July, Nielsen reported that "Suits," which originally aired on the USA Network, had set a new record as the most-viewed acquired streaming title almost four years after its series finale. The show, starring Gabriel Macht, Sarah Rafferty, Adams, and Markle, accumulated a staggering 3 billion viewing minutes on Netflix and Peacock for the week of June 26 to July 2. In that same week, the first season of "Suits" alone garnered over 26 million hours viewed on Netflix, landing it in Netflix's top 10 series for at least four weeks.
Nielsen also noted that the series was attracting interest from younger generations, as the median viewing age was trending younger than during its initial run. "Suits" followed the journey of Mike Ross (played by Adams), who finds himself working at a prestigious law firm in New York City alongside top lawyers like Harvey Specter, Donna Paulsen (Rafferty), and Rachel Zane (Markle).
Following Markle and Prince Harry's engagement announcement in November 2017, the cable channel confirmed that Markle, who eventually stepped away from show business, would be departing the show after its seventh season. Despite both Markle and Adams leaving their roles after season seven, "Suits" continued for two more seasons, concluding in 2019.
