While independent adults don't need financial support from their parents, it appeared that Harry and Meghan wanted it.
Harry embarked on a mission to tarnish his own father's image, as revealed in the Oprah interview. The interview exposed falsehoods, some of which were contradicted by photographic evidence. While Charles may not have been the most affectionate father, he did respect and honor his parents, despite their own parenting styles. Harry's expectation that his family should beg him to stay and support Meghan financially was unrealistic.
