Prince William made a significant decision during the initial stages of his relationship with Kate Middleton, the future Princess of Wales. This decision was driven by his desire to ensure that Kate had the chance to step back if she ever felt the need to do so, and to give her the opportunity to experience what life within the royal family was truly like.
The couple's journey began when they met at the University of St. Andrews in Scotland, where they were pursuing separate courses. Their courtship lasted for approximately a decade before Prince William decided to propose to his then-girlfriend.
In a revealing interview following their engagement in 2010, Prince William disclosed the reason behind his decision to delay the proposal. When interviewer Tom Bradby asked if he had waited to propose to give Kate the option to step back, Prince William confirmed this was indeed the case.
Prince William elaborated on his perspective, emphasizing his commitment to ensuring that Kate and her family had the necessary guidance and an opportunity to understand and experience life within the royal family. He candidly shared, "Kate and her family, I really wanted to make sure they have the best kind of guidance and opportunity to see what life was like in the family. That's why I was waiting all these years, because I wanted to give her a chance to see and back out if she needed to."
During the interview, Kate, who was by Prince William's side, shared a laugh and reflected on the situation. She acknowledged that at the time, she may not have been entirely pleased with the delay, but looking back, she realized that it had made her a stronger person. She explained that it provided them both with valuable time for personal growth and self-discovery, enabling them to find their own paths.
Kate and William, who are parents to three children, celebrated their 12th wedding anniversary in April. Their journey together began with their marriage in 2011, followed by the birth of their first child, Prince George, in July 2013.
In the coming month, Prince William is scheduled to travel to Singapore. However, to the disappointment of royal fans, Kate will not accompany him on this trip. Instead, she will remain in the UK to support their eldest son, Prince George, as he navigates through his exams.
