Princess Victoria Outshines Meghan Markle as UN Goodwill Ambassador, Following Fiji Scandal

After the Duchess's Fiji scandal, Crown Princess Victoria has taken over as Goodwill Ambassador from Meghan Markle. Crown Princess Victoria of Sweden has been named a Goodwill Ambassador for the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP).

This appears to be a reaction to Meghan Markle's circumstances in Fiji, where she resigned from an engagement due to claims that she was mistreated by staff members and the UN denied her the position of Goodwill Ambassador.

Princess Victoria now joins a distinguished group of 17 notable figures, including Malaysian actress Michelle Yeoh, Australian singer and actor Cody Simpson, American musician Bob Weir, American actress Connie Brittain, and Brazilian footballer Marta Vieira de Silva.

During her appointment, the Royal appeared elegantly dressed in a bright orange Zara blazer, layered over a black blouse and wide-legged trousers. It's worth noting that she wore the same eye-catching blazer, priced at $79.99, during the Global Child Forum in December 2022.

UNDP Goodwill Ambassadors play a crucial role in drawing attention to vital development issues, conveying the universal message of human development, and aiding in the achievement of sustainable development goals. Princess Victoria has actively advocated for the UN's global sustainable development goals since 2016.

In November 2022, she and Crown Prince Haakon of Norway, another Ambassador, embarked on a trip to Kenya, where they met with local United Nations staff and UNDP representatives at the UN building in Nairobi, which serves as the global headquarters of the UN Environment Program (UNEP).

Crown Princess Victoria of Sweden exemplifies all the qualifications necessary to be a UN Ambassador, a position that Meghan Markle aspired to but was not qualified for. Meghan had made various attempts to secure a role in the UN, but her efforts were ultimately unsuccessful.

Notably, Meghan left the market in Suva, the capital of Fiji, after just 8 minutes during her and Prince Harry's visit to the island in October 2018, even though it was a planned 15-minute engagement. Her abrupt departure without a hello or goodbye to the organizers raised eyebrows, as such behavior was not in line with the conduct expected from a true royal representing the Crown.

Royal biographer Robert Lacy offers a potential explanation, suggesting that Meghan might have held a grudge against UN Women, the organization responsible for the visit to the market, as they hadn't appointed her as a Goodwill Ambassador when she was still working as an actress. It has been suggested that Meghan agreed to the engagement only if all UN Women branding was removed.

Moreover, she reportedly felt underappreciated for a speech she delivered on gender equality to UN Women in New York in 2015. She might have aspired to join UN Women's distinguished roster of Goodwill Ambassadors, which included celebrities like Nicole Kidman and Emma Watson. However, in those pre-royal days, UN Women had assigned her the lesser role of advocate.

Last year, Meghan and Harry returned to New York City to attend the UN General Assembly to honor Nelson Mandela. While Prince Harry was scheduled to give a keynote speech during the assembly, protests outside the UN headquarters challenged the presence of Harry and Meghan.
