WME Drops Meghan Markle's Deal Despite Pleas, While Serena Williams Shows Support

A well-known add-on is causing significant trouble for a top company as it fails to boost the person they attempted to promote. Despite their efforts to include her in high-profile events with many A-listers, the return on investment brought to the group by this individual, identified as CB (Megan Markle), has been precisely zero.

This nine-month stint stands out as the company's most significant failure since its establishment, and the firm in question is none other than WME. CB, in this context, refers to Meghan Markle. If no progress is made, Jill Smer, the sports agent and former professional tennis player, is scheduled to convene with the board of directors in the upcoming Spring, which marks the final limit for Megan Markle's association with the company.

Jill Smer is a trailblazer for women in the industry, best known as the long-time agent to tennis star Serena Williams. She joined William Morris Endeavor Entertainment (WME) in April 2001, heading the sports and entertainment division of their new line of business. She played a key role in signing Meghan, the Duchess of Sussex, to WME's client roster in April 2023.

Regarding the deal between WME and Meghan, insiders have suggested that it primarily came about because of Smer's close ties to Serena Williams, who had a significant role in influencing WME to assist Markle. Agents at WME have described the situation as a bit of a show, and it seems that while they didn't have much of a choice in signing her, there's been reluctance among agents to actively promote her to their clients.

In the industry, Meghan is often seen as something akin to "Kryptonite." She's not someone clients are eager to associate with, and agents are hesitant to promote her. If you spot Meghan at an event, it's typically because WME's executive clients or subsidiary companies were already involved and insisted on her inclusion. Organizers often feel compelled to include her even if they might not want to. Megan seems to lack the personal brand or influence to stand on her own in these scenarios.

She aspires to be a virtuous global ambassador and a power player in Hollywood but lacks a substantial track record in these areas. Her aspirations even extend to national politics, but she has difficulty gaining the support of influential figures. Agents within WME, in general, are not very enthusiastic about promoting her, and some even view her as a joke or a liability. The effort to promote her sometimes feels insincere.

If things don't turn around by next spring, it's likely that the arrangement between Meghan and WME will be dissolved. Despite this, Meghan Markle remains the second-highest earning female athlete globally, largely due to her off-court endorsements and sponsorships, which continue to generate substantial income. These deals are also advantageous for WME, potentially earning them a significant commission.

Serena's initial intention was to have Meghan join the company, but as it stands, the funds that Serena earned are now being utilized by the company to support Meghan Markle, even though the partnership has brought about losses and a decrease in the company's benefits.
