2024 Oscar Nomination Rejects Meghan Markle's Film: Controversy Surrounds the Decision

Meghan Markle recently faced a disappointment when her Netflix film, "Meet Me at the Lake," was left out of the 2024 Oscar nomination for Best Picture. This romantic comedy, adapted from Carrie Fortune's best-selling novel, had generated high expectations but ultimately failed to secure a spot among the nominees. In the film, Markle portrayed a successful lawyer who falls for a charming fisherman, aiming to showcase her acting skills and make a comeback in the industry. However, "Meet Me at the Lake" was met with criticism for its clichéd plot, weak dialogue, and a perceived lack of chemistry among the cast.

Markle's performance was described by many as wooden and seemed to some as an attempt to portray her as a victim, possibly justifying her controversial exit from Royal duties. Critics and audiences alike were unimpressed, as reflected by the film's dismal 23% rating on Rotten Tomatoes. It was labeled as a bland romcom and a vanity project that did little to redeem Markle's reputation. Furthermore, its box office earnings were a mere $12 million against a hefty $40 million budget, overshadowed by the success of other Netflix films like Bradley Cooper's "Maestro" and the award-winning "Past Lives."

As the 2024 Academy Awards approached, Markle's film was conspicuously absent from the Best Picture shortlist. It also received no recognition from the Golden Globes, Critics Choice, or Screen Actors Guild Awards. The film's only recognition came in the form of a Razzie nomination for worst actress, putting Markle in competition with Jennifer Lopez, Kristen Stewart, and Angelina Jolie.

Meghan Markle's post-Royal film career has been marked by controversy and criticism. While she and Prince Harry aimed to produce inspirational content for Netflix, their efforts have received mixed reactions. Their documentary series, "Harry and Meghan," was criticized as self-indulgent, and their animated series, "Pearl," faced accusations of being a Disney ripoff and a cash grab.

Markle's Hollywood ambitions have been questioned by former colleagues, including her "Suits" co-star Patrick J. Adams and actor John Hamm. TV host Piers Morgan has also been openly critical of her and Harry. Their departure from Royal life has been marred by scandals, lawsuits, and accusations of hypocrisy, disrespect, and invasion of privacy. Estranged from family and friends, Markle's pursuit of Hollywood stardom seems increasingly out of reach, with her latest film's failure serving as a stark reminder of her fall from grace.
