Taking to social media, the author of "Endgame" shared a video of the premiere, captioning the post, "A different vibe to the last time we saw Prime Minister Andrew Holness with members of the royal family." He appeared to be referencing the royal visit to the Caribbean in March 2022, during which Prince William and Princess Kate visited Belize, Jamaica, and the Bahamas.
The tour was overshadowed by complaints that the released images had overtones of colonialism, particularly an unfortunate shot in Jamaica that showed the Wales on one side of a chain fence greeting a group of children. William and Kate also met with Prime Minister Holness, which is bound to raise a few eyebrows as the politician has scheduled a referendum on Jamaica's potential decision to cut ties with the British Monarchy, scheduled for this year.
While the Caribbean island has been independent since 1962, it remains a member of the Commonwealth. However, there has been speculation that it may press ahead to remove King Charles as Head of State. In 2021, Barbados, another Caribbean country, made the decision to remove Queen Elizabeth as their head of state and become a republic within the Commonwealth.
The Sussexes were all smiles at the premiere on Tuesday night, with Megan donning a black spaghetti strap gown and gold earrings, and her hair slicked back in a chic bun. Harry was seen greeting and hugging Ziggy Marley, the son of Bob and Rita Marley, who produced the film set to be released in British cinemas on February 16th.
It is unclear why the Duke and Duchess were invited to the premiere, although the film stars British talents such as Kingsley Ben-Adir and Lashana Lynch as Bob and Rita, and James Norton as producer Chris Blackwell. It is not the first time Harry and Megan have visited the island, as the Duke traveled there in 2012 as part of his Diamond Jubilee tour, and later flew there with Megan to attend the wedding of Tom Skippy and Lara Hughes Young. Interestingly, Megan's first wedding to Hollywood producer Trevor Engelson in 2011 was also held in Jamaica at the resort of Ocho Rios. The couple divorced in 2013, with the distance between them thought to be a contributing factor to the decision.
