Post-marriage, Meghan reportedly inquired about securing a suite at Windsor Castle. According to Kinsey Scoffield on GB News, Meghan aspired to share the same space as the queen but was denied for various reasons. Scoffield cited concerns about compromised privacy during public tours of Windsor Castle. The expert suggested that Meghan's requests were fueled by an infatuation with what the Duchess of Cambridge had at the time, aiming to possess something of comparable value.
At that time, the Prince and Princess of Wales were residing in Flat 1, a four-story apartment at Kensington Palace, given to them as a wedding gift by Queen Elizabeth II in 2011. The apartment underwent extensive renovations before they moved in. Meanwhile, Harry and Meghan's first home, Nottingham Cottage, became a focal point on the Netflix show, with the couple acknowledging it was much smaller than anticipated.
Discussing the contrast, Harry noted, "People lived in castles," and Meghan added, "Kensington Palace, of course, looks very regal. It has 'palace' in the name, but Nottingham Cottage was too small." In 2018 and 2019, the royal couple reportedly spent £22.4 million on renovations of properties owned by the Crown Estate. These costs were covered by a sovereign grant before Harry was later reimbursed in the fall.
