Queen Elizabeth's Discomfort: Meghan Markle's Departure from Royal Traditions During Her 2018 Wedding Ceremony

Approximately 30 million viewers tuned in to witness the momentous wedding of Meghan Markle and Prince Harry. The world was captivated as King Charles walked Meghan down the aisle, evoking sentimental emotions. However, according to royal expert Ingrid Seward, Queen Elizabeth had reservations about the arrangement. In her book, "My Mother and I," Seward reveals that the Queen was uncomfortable with Prince Charles substituting for Meghan's father, Thomas Markle. Additionally, she expressed concerns about 96-year-old Prince Philip walking without a stick, considering he had undergone hip replacement surgery just five weeks prior.

Prince Harry had previously disclosed his hope that Charles would step in for Thomas, who had been excluded from the event due to a paparazzi scandal. The Duke of Sussex shared in the documentary "Prince, Son and Heir" that he asked his father to fulfill the role, and Charles readily agreed, stating, "Yes, of course, I'll do whatever Meghan needs, and I'm here to support you."

Despite Harry's request, Meghan ultimately chose to enter the church alone and met Prince Charles at the midpoint of the walkway. Robert Hardman, in his book "Queen of Our Times," explains that this decision reflected Meghan's confident and independent nature, as she aimed to make a grand entrance on her own terms.

According to OK! magazine, Seward recently stated that Queen Elizabeth would be disappointed with the recent royal rebranding efforts by the Sussexes. Seward emphasized that the late Queen had held fondness for Harry and Meghan, recognizing their potential as a couple working for the Commonwealth, which was her father's legacy.

Seward explained that the Queen saw Meghan's mixed-race heritage, youth, style, and intelligence as valuable assets for the monarchy. However, she expressed disappointment when her expectations for Harry and Meghan's contributions were not met. In 2020, instead of supporting the monarchy, the Sussexes expressed their desire to step back, causing distress for the Queen. It was then that the Queen's determined resolve came into action.

The Sussexes launched their website, sussex.com, which received criticism for capitalizing on their royal titles. Seward noted that with the support of her husband, Queen Elizabeth made it clear that the couple could not have it both ways—being part of the monarchy while pursuing personal endeavors. She prohibited them from using the website name sussexroyal.com and the HRH titles associated with their royal connections.

Seward concluded that the Queen would have felt hurt and angry about the recent developments concerning Harry and Meghan's departure from their royal roles.
