In 2022, the Duchess of Sussex made a revelation about her Nigerian heritage, disclosing that she discovered through a genealogy test that she is 43 percent Nigerian. During their tour of Nigeria, Prince Harry and Meghan Markle were seen engaging in various activities in Lagos, where Meghan captivated onlookers with her stunning appearance in a traditional dress.
After spending the initial days in Abuja, the Duke and Duchess of Sussex arrived in Lagos, where they had a private meeting with Babjide Sanwo-Olu, the Governor of Lagos State. Meghan donned a vibrant flowing yellow dress for the meeting, held at the Governor's residence. The discussions encompassed topics such as the Invictus Games, mental health awareness, and the couple's visit to Nigeria.
Following the engagement, Meghan was photographed wearing a matching shawl in front of the Marina State House, reportedly presented to her by the Governor's wife. During a speech, Governor Sanwo-Olu expressed his aspirations for what Prince Harry would take away from his time in Nigeria. He highlighted the country's diversity and emphasized the importance of peaceful coexistence.
The Governor stated, "For Prince Harry, this has been a very interesting and very informative trip to the country. He has seen a lot and is still absorbing a great deal. One of the things we hope he takes away is an understanding of the extent of our country's size and the ongoing efforts to ensure that we live together in peace and harmony." Sanwo-Olu also extended his warm welcome and appreciation to the couple on behalf of Lagos.
On Saturday, Meghan made a pledge to incorporate more vibrant colors into her attire during her engagements in Nigeria. She fondly referred to Nigeria as "my country" during a women's event organized by the World Trade Organization in Abuja.
Expressing her gratitude, Meghan said, "I want to start by saying thank you very much for just how gracious you've all been in welcoming my husband and me to this country... my country. I am just flattered, honored, and inspired. It has been a whirlwind 24 hours since we arrived. And I quickly got the memo that I need to wear more color, so I can fit in with all of you and your incredible fashion."
The Duchess of Sussex's revelation about her Nigerian heritage in 2022 came as a result of a genealogy test she had undertaken. The test unveiled that she has Nigerian ancestry accounting for 43 percent of her genetic makeup.
