In an official correspondence, it was revealed that the esteemed American foundation established by the Duke and Duchess of Sussex had allowed its registration fees to lapse since early May. The letter, issued by California's Attorney General Rob Bonter, confirmed that Archewell has been classified as delinquent within the registry of charitable organizations and fundraisers.
The reason behind this classification is Archewell's failure to submit both its annual report and the required registration fees. The notice explains that an organization labeled as delinquent is considered to be in an unfavorable standing and is therefore prohibited from engaging in activities that necessitate registration, such as soliciting or distributing charitable funds.
The communication concludes with a strong reminder that a delinquent organization is not in good standing and is strictly forbidden from participating in any conduct that requires registration, including soliciting or dispersing charitable funds. The organization may face consequences, including possible penalties, and its registration could potentially be suspended or revoked by the registry.
As of now, Archewell finds itself in the position of having to provide records to explain the delay. Reports from the United States indicate that the foundation has requested additional time to submit the necessary documents. However, California's official registry still lists Archewell as being behind on its obligations as of the most recent update.
After stepping down from their senior royal roles, Prince Harry and Meghan established the foundation when they relocated to the United States in March 2020. The foundation not only encompasses their nonprofit charitable work but also includes for-profit ventures in media production, such as Archewell Audio and Archewell Productions.
The notice of delinquency comes five months after it was revealed that the Archewell Foundation experienced a significant drop in revenue, amounting to $8.7 million within a year. The Sussexes have been contacted through their charity, Archewell, for their response to this development.
