Inside the £5M Windsor Retreat: An Exploration of Prince William and Kate Middleton’s Adelaide Cottage

Although Adelaide Cottage is smaller than Kensington Palace and the ten-bedroom Amner Hall that the Wales family visits in Norfolk, it offers plenty of green space for the family to enjoy. The Wales family is avid naturalists, and this quaint residence allows them to connect with nature.

The Prince and Princess of Wales moved into Adelaide Cottage, a Grade II listed home in Windsor, during the summer of 2022. Nestled within the expansive 655-acre Windsor estate, Adelaide Cottage stands in stark contrast to the opulence of their former home, a 20-room, four-story apartment 1A at Kensington Palace. Before relocating to Berkshire, Kate and William enjoyed the lavish lifestyle that came with their previous residence.

Adelaide Cottage has four bedrooms, providing ample space for Prince William, Princess Kate, and their three children: Prince George, 11, Princess Charlotte, 9, and Prince Louis, 6. However, there isn’t much room for Maria Teresa Turr, the family's beloved nanny, who needs accommodations of her own.

Despite its smaller size compared to Kensington Palace and Amner Hall, Adelaide Cottage still features a generous amount of green space. The family enjoys outdoor amenities, including a charming fountain and circular flower beds, as seen in a vintage painting of the cottage's garden. Although not much else is known about the home, its location on the Windsor estate offers the family unparalleled seclusion, allowing George, Charlotte, and Louis to play outside without fear of prying eyes.

The cottage was built by architect Jeffry Wyatt in 1831, and among its early residents was Peter Townsend, a notable figure in Princess Margaret's life. Some original 19th-century features remain, including the beautifully decorated ceiling in the main bedroom and a marble fireplace in the living room.

One reason Princess Kate and Prince William chose to move to Adelaide Cottage is its proximity to their families. Pippa, Kate's sister, and her husband James Matthews live nearby in Berkshire, while Kate’s parents reside in Bucklebury, just a 45-minute drive away.

There’s also a rundown annex on the property that could be restored to provide additional space for staff and visitors. Reports suggest that the Prince and Princess of Wales have discussed renovation plans with the Crown Estate, especially following Kate's announcement earlier this month that she has completed her chemotherapy treatment for an undisclosed type of cancer.
