Kate Middleton and Family Honor Princess Diana on Her 27th Anniversary

Princess Diana passed away over 25 years ago following a tragic car crash in Paris. At the time of her death, her two sons, Prince William and Prince Harry, were just 15 and 12 years old. Sadly, this means their wives and children never had the chance to meet her. Over the years, both princes have openly shared how they keep their mother's memory alive, especially through their children. William has said it’s important that they know who she was and that she lived a meaningful life.

Today, Prince George, Princess Charlotte, and Prince Louis know all about their grandmother Diana. But many have often wondered: have William and Catherine ever taken their children to visit Diana’s gravesite?

In a touching and emotional gesture, Princess Catherine recently revealed how Prince William has taken steps to ensure their three children honor their late grandmother. On the 27th anniversary of her tragic passing, the couple brought their kids to Diana's resting place at Althorp. The visits are undoubtedly emotional, and Catherine ensures that their children learn all about Diana, especially on significant dates like her birthday or the anniversary of her death.

Catherine’s mother, Carole, is very close to George, Charlotte, and Louis, and has been a grandmother they’ve grown up with. Unfortunately, they never had the chance to meet Diana—just as Catherine herself didn’t. On the day she got engaged to William, she mentioned how much she would have loved to have known her.

Despite the years that have passed, William and Catherine continue to incorporate Diana’s memory into their daily lives. One of the most heartfelt traditions they’ve shared with their children is creating handmade cards for “Granny Diana” every year. These cards are often filled with drawings, personal messages, and memories of Diana, helping George, Charlotte, and Louis express their love for the grandmother they never knew.

Princess Diana was laid to rest at the Althorp Estate in Northamptonshire, which is the family home of her brother, Charles Spencer, the 9th Earl Spencer. Her grave is located on an island in the middle of an ornamental lake called The Oval within the Althorp Park Pleasure Garden. The path to the lake is lined with 36 oak trees, each symbolizing a year of Diana’s life. Her burial site is only accessible by boat, and while it is off-limits to the public, members of the royal family can visit to pay their respects.

In 2001, Diana’s brother, Charles, publicly criticized Prince Charles for never visiting his ex-wife’s grave. He mentioned that the now King always had an open invitation to visit, but he had yet to do so. When asked if King Charles has since visited, a palace spokesperson declined to confirm, stating that it was a “personal and private matter” for him.

With the 27th anniversary of Diana’s passing just behind us on August 31st, Prince Harry seems to feel a pull to reconnect with the only family he has left on his mother's side. During a recent brief visit to the UK, Harry chose to stay with his uncle, Charles Spencer, at Althorp. His bond with Diana’s family has seemingly grown stronger, especially after his discreet trip to attend his mother’s brother-in-law Lord Robert Fellowes' memorial service.

This event, held near the Royal Sandringham Estate, marked a rare occasion where both royal brothers were present. Although they were reportedly distant from one another and didn’t interact, their joint attendance was a poignant moment. The brothers, seated quietly at the back of the church, chose not to sit near one another, a decision that highlights the ongoing tensions between them.

While seeing both brothers pay their respects together was heartening, any hope for a rekindling of their once-close bond seems far off. A family friend shared, “We are happy to confirm both princes were there,” but noted the anticipated warmth of a reunion was “noticeably absent.”
