The first sign is related to a statement Prince Harry made ahead of his 40th birthday, where he mentioned their children, Archie and Lilibet, but did not mention Meghan. This omission has raised eyebrows and led to speculation that all is not well between the Duke and Duchess of Sussex.
This comes alongside reports from Harry's former friends who claim that he's miserable in America, overshadowed by Meghan, and often seen as merely her "plus one." Royal expert Hugo Vickers has pointed out two key signs that there are issues in their relationship: Harry not mentioning Meghan in his birthday statement, and their reported difficulty in retaining staff.
Hugo Vickers was quoted in *The Sun*, expressing surprise that Harry didn’t mention his wife, given his usual habit of doing so. He added, “This birthday will be a time for him to reflect on his past actions, especially those that have caused damage to his relationships with his family and led to his isolation.”
Vickers also discussed the couple’s decision to leave the royal family in 2020, expressing doubt about their future success in the "highly commercial world" they’ve entered, which is very different from Harry’s royal upbringing. According to Vickers, the couple relies heavily on the fading interest in their royal status, which won’t last forever. “The press is interested now, but that won’t be the case forever,” he added.
And this is the thing, right? We're now witnessing a shift in how the media views Harry and Meghan. Gone are the days when they were showered with positive headlines. Now, more and more people are seeing them, as far as I’m concerned, as opportunists. The favorable press coverage has dwindled, and people are finally realizing the pair are not the “royal celebrities” they once were.
As for Meghan’s role, Vickers believes she’s always been the one setting the agenda in their relationship. He suggests that Harry is more of a follower, and there's speculation that she’s even guiding him on how to behave in public. Observers often see a confident Meghan and a visibly unhappy Prince Harry during their public appearances. Take their recent “fake royal tour” in Colombia, for example—Meghan was all smiles, soaking up the attention, while Harry looked frustrated and annoyed.
Vickers noted that this isn’t the Harry he recognizes, and believes his life is being dictated more by Meghan than by himself. He pointed out that she has allegedly isolated Harry from his old friends, surrounding him with new friends handpicked by her. For his 40th birthday, it’s unlikely Harry will enjoy a fun "boys’ weekend" like he might have in the past.
Vickers believes that while Harry once found excitement in his relationship with Meghan, things might be different now. He suspects the bond holding them together is their children, of whom Harry speaks so fondly. Still, it’s curious that he failed to mention Meghan in his recent statement about his birthday.
There’s also a sadness to Harry’s situation, as Vickers pointed out that his children are growing up far away from their cousins, including Prince George, the future King of England. He wondered how Harry’s children will feel when they realize they could have spent more time with their royal relatives.
As Harry’s 40th birthday approaches, Meghan has once again been dubbed “Duchess Difficult,” with reports surfacing about her alleged mistreatment of staff. Staff turnover at their household remains high, and some have accused Meghan of being a bully. This isn’t the first time such accusations have surfaced, with rumors of bullying from her time in the UK, too. Many still call for the release of the royal family’s bullying report from her time there.
Vickers shared a story about how difficult Meghan could be, recounting how she was once reportedly rude to a gardener at Adelaide Cottage, leading the head gardener to complain to the Queen herself, who then scolded Meghan. This high staff turnover is seen as a bad sign, especially compared to the late Prince Philip, who inspired great loyalty among his staff.
Ultimately, Hugo Vickers believes this will all end badly for Harry and Meghan, much like it did for the Duke of Windsor, whom he once met and described as having “the saddest eyes.” Vickers doesn’t see a bright future for Harry unless the couple can continue to deliver in a very competitive world. He also hinted that Meghan may have independent plans of her own.
And honestly, I feel the same. Meghan has already signed with WME to handle her personal projects, not joint projects with Harry. She’s building her own brand, with ventures like her cooking show that have nothing to do with Harry. Make no mistake, she’s making her own plans, guys.
Vickers added, “The reason we’re talking about them is because Harry is a prince. Meghan was doing good work before, but nothing compared to the attention she received by marrying him.” He’s essentially saying what many of us have thought—that Meghan owes much of her fame to her marriage to Harry.
Still, Vickers believes Meghan may one day feel confident enough to go off on her own and discard Harry when she no longer needs the association with his royal status. And as I’ve said before, I truly believe Meghan will push for a divorce once she feels she can be successful without Harry.
