Princess Kate Shares Her Worries About First Christmas with the Queen and a Simple Gesture That Helped
During her first Christmas at Sandringham, Princess Kate revealed that a small gesture from the late Queen put her at ease. Despite being one of the most beloved members of the royal family now, Kate had her share of anxieties in her early years of dating Prince William, particularly regarding royal life.
Kate felt apprehensive about what to bring Her Majesty for Christmas, even though she and the Queen shared a unique bond that developed over time. Rather than purchasing a gift, Kate decided to create her own chutney, which the Queen apparently enjoyed. This heartfelt gesture calmed Kate’s nerves.
“I remember my first visit to Sandringham at Christmas, and I was unsure of what to get the Queen as a Christmas present,” Kate reflected in the 2016 ITV documentary *Our Queen at 90*. “Gosh, what should I give her? That was my thought. Despite my fears that my homemade gift might not go over well, I chose to make my grandmother’s chutney recipe.”
To Kate’s surprise, the next day she noticed the chutney on the table, which reassured her. “I was a little alarmed at first, but she has done that on numerous occasions,” Kate recalled. “I believe it simply demonstrates her caring and concern for everyone. I think that small gesture went a long way for me.”
In the same documentary, Kate also discussed how the late Queen went above and beyond to ensure her great-grandchildren felt cared for. She noted that Her Majesty would leave small gifts for the children when they came to stay with her. “She always leaves a little gift or something in their room when we go and stay,” Kate shared. “That just shows her love for her family.”
