Princess Kate has openly acknowledged a relatable rookie mistake she made during her early royal walkabouts—and she’s learned a great deal since then.
When she first met Prince William at the University of St. Andrews, the pair formed a close friendship that eventually blossomed into romance. After dating for several years and navigating a brief breakup, the couple announced their engagement in 2010.
Since that milestone, Kate has gradually adjusted to the public eye that comes with royal life, skillfully balancing her responsibilities with her desire for privacy. After their marriage, she was introduced to her royal duties with care, taking the time to establish herself while her family expanded and her responsibilities as a mother grew.
In a documentary celebrating the late Queen Elizabeth’s 90th birthday, Kate candidly discussed the challenges she encountered in her early days as a royal. She admitted that adapting to some of the more subtle protocols of royal engagements took time.
Kate revealed that during her first public outings, she often became so engrossed in conversation that she lost track of time. Her eagerness to connect with people even became a light-hearted joke within the House of Windsor.
"I think there is a real art to walkabouts; everyone teases me in the family that I spend far too long chatting,” Kate noted. “So I think I've still got to learn a little bit more and pick up a few more tips, I suppose."
She also expressed her gratitude for Queen Elizabeth's support during one of her first solo events, where the Queen provided guidance and reassurance.
"She was very supportive. The fact she took the time to make sure that I was happy and looked after for that particular occasion…just shows how caring she is, really," Kate reflected.
Recently, Prince William was seen playfully nudging Kate to wrap up her conversation while they attended a high-profile wedding in Jordan. This light-hearted moment, captured on camera, suggests that Kate’s love for a good chat remains as strong as ever.
Having spent part of her childhood in Jordan, it’s likely she had plenty to discuss with the newlyweds, Crown Prince Al Hussein and Princess Rajwa.
