Perry, who is the godfather to Meghan and Harry’s daughter, Lilibet, has often shared details about how their friendship blossomed. In the couple’s Netflix documentary series, he recalled how they first connected. At a time when the couple had just moved to the U.S., Perry offered them the comfort of his home.
“I’m not a royal watcher, so I didn’t pay much attention to the details of Meghan’s life, but I remember hearing about the drama with her father before the wedding,” Perry said. “It struck me as deeply hurtful. If he were my father, I can’t imagine how painful that situation must have been for her.”
He continued, “I thought about how she had found the man of her dreams, only to walk into this whirlwind of media madness. Here she was, needing her family’s support, and then having her father behave in such a hurtful way. I’ve been through my own experiences where family members changed when success came my way, so I understood the pain she must have been feeling.”
Before their wedding, Perry reached out to Meghan with a note of support. “I sent her a message just hoping that she would get through it all,” he recalled. “I told her that everything in her life had prepared her for this moment, or at least that’s what I thought at the time. We became close friends after that.”
The bond between Meghan, Harry, and Perry grew stronger over time. “We talk on the phone about all sorts of things,” Perry said of their friendship. But the tone was different when Harry and Meghan called him to ask him to become Lili’s godfather. “They were very serious, and I could tell something important was happening. They asked me if I would be Lili’s godfather, and I was stunned. I had to take a moment to process it, but my answer was immediate: ‘Of course, I’d be honored.’”
