Meghan Markle, Duchess of Sussex, surprised fans by revealing an unexpected skill in the couple’s latest Netflix docu-series, Polo. Released on December 10, the series captivated viewers with its exploration of the glamorous equestrian sport, a favorite pastime of Prince Harry.
While the series didn’t generate the same level of headline-grabbing revelations as the Sussexes' 2022 documentary, it offered a refreshing glimpse into Meghan’s lesser-known abilities, including her fluency in Spanish.
The five-episode docu-series follows some of the world’s top polo players as they prepare for the 2024 U.S. Open Polo Championship in Wellington, Florida. The show also highlights Prince Harry’s participation in the Royal Salute Polo Challenge, a charity event benefiting his Sentebale foundation.
Amid the excitement of the matches, one standout moment featured Meghan seamlessly conversing in Spanish with legendary polo player Adolfo Cambiaso.
The candid exchange unfolded after Prince Harry mentioned to Cambiaso that Meghan was fluent in Spanish. Cambiaso, visibly impressed, reacted with a surprised, “Really?” before engaging Meghan in a lively conversation.
During the chat, Meghan revealed that she had lived in Palermo Viejo and Las Cañitas—neighborhoods in Buenos Aires—about 20 years ago. Her proficiency in the language is rooted in her time at Northwestern University, where she interned at the U.S. Embassy in Argentina and studied abroad in Madrid, Spain.
“That’s where the polo fields were,” Cambiaso remarked, to which Meghan fondly replied, referencing Argentina's national holiday, “I loved the 25th of May.”
The playful exchange ended with Cambiaso turning to Prince Harry and asking, “Do you speak Spanish?” Meghan, laughing, answered for her husband, “Yes,” while wrapping her arm around him.
Caught off guard, Harry sheepishly admitted, “He knows I don’t!” before adding with a grin, “Well, yes. A little, a little.”
Meghan’s Spanish skills are just one of her many talents revealed this year. Her affinity for the language was also on display during a tour of Colombia earlier in 2023.
In August, the Duke and Duchess of Sussex embarked on a four-day visit to Colombia at the invitation of Vice President Francia Márquez. While visiting a primary school, Meghan engaged with children in Spanish, discussing her son, Prince Archie, while Harry practiced asking their names.
Meghan Markle's ability to communicate effortlessly in Spanish adds to her growing reputation as a versatile and relatable figure. Whether connecting with international leaders or conversing with polo legends, the Duchess continues to surprise and inspire audiences around the globe.
Her linguistic prowess showcased in Polo not only delighted fans but also underscored her commitment to fostering meaningful connections, even under the bright lights of global scrutiny.
